Across Middlesex County, from the triple-deckers of Somerville and Cambridge to the larger lots in Lexington, Sudbury, and Chelmsford, September usually ends the same way: cooler nights, the first real leaf drop, and a short list of jobs that need to be done before the ground gets wet and cold. This month-closer follows our September 2026 outlook and picks up where the overseeding season leaves off.
Is it too late to seed a Middlesex County lawn in October?
For a standard fall overseeding, yes. Our rule of thumb is to seed by September 15. After about October 1, seed that germinates may not establish before frost. The better plan is to wait and do a dormant seeding in late November, when soil is cold enough that seed sits until spring. If you are planning that, October is a good time to topdress thin areas with ¼–½ inch of loam so the seed has a clean bed later. UMass Extension's turf program covers fall lawn care in detail.
What October yard work should Greater Boston homeowners finish?
| Job | Material | Typical depth or amount |
|---|---|---|
| Amend beds for spring | Compost or Garden Soil | 1–2 inches worked in |
| Build or fill raised beds | Horticultural Soil or Garden Soil | About 12 inches |
| Fix a soggy downspout area | #57 Stone | Clean drainage stone, no fines |
| Rebuild a driveway base | #610 or Dense Pack | 4–6 inches compacted, then a 2–4 inch top coat |
| Refresh beds | Mulch | 2 inches existing, 3 inches new |
To size any of these, use square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards. One cubic yard covers about 162 sq ft at 2 inches or about 100 sq ft at 3 inches. A soil test through the UMass Soil Testing Lab before you amend tells you what your beds actually need. Browse the full soil collection for loam, compost, and blends.
Why do drainage and base work belong before the wet weeks?
Late fall in the Boston area tends to bring longer stretches of rain, and soggy ground makes everything harder. Digging is messier, compacting a base is less reliable, and a wheelbarrow on a soft lawn leaves ruts. Getting drainage stone and driveway base down in early October means the work settles before freeze-thaw cycles start, and standing water has somewhere to go before it turns to ice.
Is October still good for planting?
Yes. Trees and shrubs planted in early to mid October have warm soil and cool air, which favors root growth over leaf growth. Backfill with the native soil mixed with some compost, water deeply, and finish with 2–3 inches of mulch kept off the trunk.
Why do winter salt orders pick up in October?
Every year, once the first cold forecasts show up, contractors and property managers start laying in salt and salt-sand for the season. Ordering in October gets your stockpile in place before the first-storm rush. Ottr delivers rock salt, treated rock salt, salt-sand mixes, and coarse sand in bulk across the service area, and contractor accounts can set up recurring winter orders through sales@ottrsupply.com. For help choosing, read our winter material Q&A or browse the salt and ice melt collection.
Each material is its own load with its own delivery fee. Soil, stone, and salt loads carry up to 6 cubic yards, and mulch loads up to 10. Pricing is on each product page, and the delivery fee for your ZIP shows at checkout.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still topdress my lawn in October?
Yes. A ¼–½ inch layer of loam on thin areas sets up a late-November dormant seeding.
Should I mulch now or wait?
Now is fine. Mulch in October holds moisture and protects roots through early freezes.
Does Ottr deliver in winter?
Yes. Deliveries run year-round, including winter.
