How much mulch do I add over mulch that is already there?
Push a trowel through the old mulch to soil level and read the depth off the blade. Check three or four spots — beds are never uniform. On established Malden lots you will usually find one to two inches of intact material under a crust. Subtract that from three inches and you have your top-off: an inch, sometimes an inch and a half. Add a full three inches over what is already down and you are at five, which is where mulch stops helping.
Why is three inches the ceiling, and what does smothering look like?
Three inches holds moisture, moderates soil temperature and shades out weed seed. Deeper, shredded wood mats into a crust, dries hard and sheds light rain sideways, so the soil underneath ends up drier rather than wetter. You see it in perennials that came up thin, in dry dusty soil under dark damp mulch the day after rain, and in yellowing low branches on a shrub whose base has been buried over successive springs.
The worst version is vertical. Mulch heaped against a trunk keeps bark permanently damp, which invites rot and borers and gives voles winter cover. The International Society of Arboriculture is direct about it: keep mulch off the trunk flare. Build a doughnut, not a volcano. UMass Extension Landscape covers the plant-health side.
How many yards does a Malden top-off take?
cubic yards = (square feet × depth in inches) ÷ 324
| Bed | Square feet | Depth added | Cubic yards |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 ft × 30 ft foundation strip | 90 | 1 inch | 0.28 |
| Two 5-ft tree rings | 40 | 2 inches | 0.25 |
| Every bed on a typical lot | 350 | 1 inch | 1.08 |
On the tight lots around Edgeworth and Linden, a whole-property top-off is one yard, and there is no minimum order. Malden is 9.2 driving miles from our Dispatch Office in Dorchester, inside the 30-mile flat zone, so delivery is $100 per load. Mulch runs up to 10 yards per trip and the fee is charged per load, so one yard and ten yards both deliver for $100 — but two different mulches are two line items, which means two loads.
Which mulch for a June refresh?
Texture matters more than colour, because fine double-ground material is what mats at depth. Pine Bark Mulch at $55 a yard stays nuggety and open, and holds position on the sloped beds toward the Fells side of the city. Black Mulch is dyed hardwood and looks sharp street-side, but keep it out of vegetable beds — undyed Hemlock or Pine Bark belongs there. Shop mulch bed refresh materials or the full bulk mulch collection, and see Malden landscape supply for local delivery.
Do I have to strip out last year's mulch first?
Only if you are already at three inches or the surface has knitted into a crust. Otherwise rake it hard enough to break the crust, then add on top.
Should I lay landscape fabric under the mulch?
Not in a planted bed. Organic mulch breaks down into a seedbed on top of the fabric, weeds root into that layer, and the fabric traps the roots you care about.
Can you drop one yard on a narrow Malden driveway?
Yes. A cubic yard piles up about three feet on a side. Curbside is the default; on-property placement needs a signed liability waiver.
