Hyannis is far enough from our Dispatch Office in Dorchester that freight is a real line on the invoice. Get the order right and mulch lands at about $83 a yard delivered; get it wrong and the same material costs $103. The difference is one decision.
What does mulch delivery to Hyannis cost?
Delivery is $100 per load inside 30 driving miles, plus $4 for every mile past 30. Hyannis is about 67 miles out — $249 per load. The rest of the town spreads either side: $230 in West Barnstable, $255 at Hyannis Port, with Centerville, Osterville, Cotuit and Marstons Mills between.
What counts as one load?
One dump-truck trip. Mulch caps at 10 cubic yards per trip. Rock, stone, sand and soil cap at 6. And the part that catches people out: loads are counted per line item, not per order. Two mulches on one order is two trucks and two fees.
Where does the break-even actually sit?
Here is the whole argument in one table, using Black Mulch at $58 a yard into Hyannis at $249 a load.
| Order | Loads | Material | Freight | Total | Per yard delivered |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 yards | 1 | $348 | $249 | $597 | $99.50 |
| 10 yards | 1 | $580 | $249 | $829 | $82.90 |
| 11 yards | 2 | $638 | $498 | $1,136 | $103.27 |
| 14 yards | 2 | $812 | $498 | $1,310 | $93.57 |
| 20 yards | 2 | $1,160 | $498 | $1,658 | $82.90 |
Read the eleventh yard closely. It costs $307 — $58 of mulch and $249 of truck — and pushes your delivered rate up more than $20 a yard. You do not get back to the ten-yard rate until twenty. If the tape says 10.5, order ten and stretch the last bed thinner. If it says fourteen, take fourteen; the second truck is paid for either way.
How do I know whether I need ten yards?
Measure, then use the formula: cubic yards = (square feet × depth in inches) ÷ 324. One yard covers about 100 square feet at three inches, or 160 at two. A four-foot bed along a 25-foot frontage is 100 square feet, so three inches there is almost exactly one yard. A Hyannis lot with 120 linear feet of four-foot beds plus three eight-foot tree rings is roughly 630 square feet — 5.8 yards, not ten.
Most Hyannis houses need five to seven yards. But since the $249 is already spent, walk the property with the tape: the side strip along the fence, behind the garage, the bed you have meant to widen. Those take an order from six yards to ten at no extra freight.
What about ordering two colours?
It costs a full second delivery. Five yards of black plus three of Hemlock Mulch is eight yards on two trucks — $498 of freight, where ten yards of one mulch is $249. One case justifies it: hemlock and pine bark are undyed, the correct choice around food crops, and dyed black mulch belongs nowhere near a vegetable garden.
How deep should the mulch go?
Three inches total, not three inches on top of what is there. If last year's layer is still 1.5 inches, you need 1.5 — which halves your yardage. Rake the old layer to break the crust, top up to three, and keep mulch an inch back from stems.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum mulch order for Hyannis?
No — one yard is a valid order. It just carries the full $249 delivery, which is why small orders cost a lot per yard.
Can I split ten yards between two addresses?
No. Each drop is its own trip and its own fee.
How much does a yard of mulch weigh?
Black mulch runs 600–800 lbs per cubic yard; pine bark, cedar, hemlock and playground mulch 500–700. Worth knowing before you wheelbarrow it in July.
