Chatham is the elbow of the Cape, which is a pretty way of saying it is a long way from anywhere with a gravel pit. We deliver there. Here is what it costs and what to do about it.
1. What does delivery to Chatham cost?
Delivery is $100 per load inside 30 driving miles of the yard, plus $4 for every mile beyond 30. Chatham is roughly 84 miles out, so:
| Chatham village | Delivery per load |
|---|---|
| South Chatham | $309 |
| Chatham | $315 |
| North Chatham / West Chatham | $317 |
No toll, no bridge surcharge, no seasonal markup — mileage and nothing else. The ZIP checker on any product page returns the exact figure for your address before you pay.
2. On the outer Cape, freight is a real share of the ticket
Better seen than described. Each of these is one full load into Chatham at $315:
| Material | Cap per trip | Material cost | Freight | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black Mulch, $58/yd | 10 yd | $580 | $315 | $895 |
| Loam (Screened), $55/yd | 6 yd | $330 | $315 | $645 |
| Gray Granite ¾", $79.50/yd | 6 yd | $477 | $315 | $792 |
| Riverbed ⅜" (Pea Stone), $97.50/yd | 6 yd | $585 | $315 | $900 |
On a six-yard load of loam the truck is 49% of the bill. That is the honest arithmetic of the outer Cape, and it is why the next point deserves your time.
3. The fee is per load, and loads are counted per line item
Mulch caps at ten yards per trip; rock, stone, sand and soil at six. Ten yards of one mulch to Chatham is $315 of freight. Eleven is $630. Five yards of black plus five of red cedar — the same ten yards — is also $630, because each line item counts as its own load. Live with one colour and that is $315 saved for no work.
4. The six-yard stone cap is where it bites hardest
Mulch jobs usually fit in one trip; hardscape jobs often do not. A driveway re-base wanting twelve yards of gravel is two loads and $630 of freight before you have bought a single stone. The lever runs the other way too: 3.6 yards costs the same freight as 6, so if your maths comes in under the cap, fill the rest of the truck with what you will need for the fire pit pad or the side path.
5. Curbside is the default, and Chatham makes that matter
The pile goes at the end of the driveway or on the apron unless you have signed a liability waiver for on-property placement. Down the elbow that is not a formality: lanes off Route 28 are narrow with little turning room, many drives are soft sand or crushed shell, and a truck that sinks is a bad afternoon for everyone.
On timing, book weekday mornings in season — Route 28 through Harwich Port and West Chatham is the only practical approach and it is slow from late morning onward in July and August. MassDOT posts live canal bridge conditions. Weekend slots fill first.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum order for Chatham?
No. One cubic yard is a valid order — but one yard costs the same freight as ten, which is the whole case for ordering to the cap.
Why is South Chatham cheaper than North Chatham?
Fewer driving miles. At $4 per mile beyond the first thirty, the two-mile difference comes out as $8.
What holds up best in Chatham's sandy, exposed conditions?
Chunky pine bark mulch over shredded, stone from the decorative stone range in wind-scoured beds, and compost worked into the outwash sand rather than loam laid on top.
