Douglas runs uphill from east to west, and the ground changes as it goes: glacial till under a sandy loam on the eastern side, then steep, stony footing in what the old surveys called the Douglas Rocky Woods, where the land climbs past 900 feet. East Douglas is still the working center of town, built along the Mumford River where the Douglas Axe Manufacturing Company and later the Hayward and Schuster woolen mills held a mile of river frontage. Douglas State Forest fills the southwest corner around Wallum Lake, with Whitins Reservoir, Badluck Pond and Manchaug Pond scattered north and west, and the Southern New England Trunkline Trail cutting across town on the old rail bed. Main Street follows the line of the old Worcester and Providence Turnpike, Route 16 carries the east-west traffic, and improvements to Route 146 have pushed new house lots onto ground that was pasture a generation ago.
