Product Description

Blue-Gray Granite ⅜" — The Small-Format Blue-Gray Stone for Walkways & Detail Work

Native Boston-area blue-gray granite — not to be confused with Pennsylvania/New York bluestone.

Our ⅜" Blue-Gray Granite is the small-format version of our classic blue-gray crushed stone — the size that fills paver joints comfortably, finishes drip edges cleanly, and walks well underfoot in garden paths. It's the right call when ¾" feels too chunky but you still want that signature blue-gray look.

At a glance

Material Blue-gray crushed granite, native to the Boston area
Size ⅜" nominal — angular, crushed faces
Coverage ~100 sq ft at 3" depth
Weight ~2,500–2,700 lbs/yd³
Also known as Blue stone ⅜", ⅜" crushed blue, small blue gravel, blue chip stone
Sold by The cubic yard, bulk dump truck delivery

What it's good for

  • Garden walkways and stepping-path fill
  • Drip edges around foundations and patios where finer stone reads better
  • Fine drainage layers in shallow trenches and downspout dispersal
  • Pot drainage, terrarium bottoms, and decorative top dressing

How much do I need?

A 4' × 20' garden walkway at 3" depth takes about 0.74 cubic yards. For a 100 sq ft drip edge along a foundation at 3", plan on about 1 yard. Detail work like decorative top-dressing in beds runs at about 1" depth, so a 200 sq ft bed top-up needs only about 0.62 yards.

How Blue-Gray Granite ⅜" compares

  • vs. Blue-Gray Granite ½": ½" is slightly chunkier — better when you want more visual texture. ⅜" walks more comfortably and finishes drip edges cleaner.
  • vs. Blue-Gray Granite Dust: Dust is the fines (¼"-minus). ⅜" is clean stone with no fines. Use dust for compaction, ⅜" for decorative texture.
  • vs. Gray Granite ⅜": Same size; blue-gray reads cooler, gray is the neutral classic. Color preference only.
  • vs. Riverbed ⅜": Riverbed is smooth and rounded (naturally tumbled). Blue-Gray Granite ⅜" is angular and crushed — locks under foot traffic, looks more architectural.

Frequently asked questions

Is Blue-Gray Granite ⅜" the same as bluestone?
No — bluestone is a flat flagstone from PA or NY used for patio slabs. Blue-Gray Granite is our native Boston-area crushed granite.

What is Blue-Gray Granite ⅜" used for?
Garden walkways, drip edges, fine drainage layers, pot drainage, and decorative top-dressing. The small-format pick when you want the blue-gray look on a refined scale.

Will ⅜" Blue-Gray Granite fill paver joints?
For permeable interlocking paver joints, yes — gradationally similar to the spec'd "#89 joint stone." For traditional pavers, use polymeric sand instead.

Can I use ⅜" Blue-Gray Granite in pots for drainage?
Yes — it's an excellent pot drainage layer. 1–2" in the bottom of large planters keeps roots from sitting in water.

How much does a cubic yard weigh?
About 2,500–2,700 lbs per cubic yard.
