Five villages make up Sutton — Sutton Center up on the hill, Manchaug and West Sutton out to the west, South Sutton, and Wilkinsonville down toward the Blackstone — and each one was laid out around a different piece of water. Manchaug Pond feeds the Mumford River, which runs east through Northbridge and Uxbridge before joining the Blackstone, and the mill village at Manchaug still shows the stone and brick of that trade. Purgatory Chasm splits the middle of town, a bedrock fissure cut by glacial meltwater, and the ledge and till that produced it turn up in half the house lots here as boulders a foot down. Route 146 runs north to south through the town and gives a truck a clean approach from the Pike, but the older village streets off it are another matter, and Lake Singletary and the country club side add their own tight turns.
