Baldwinville is the biggest of Templeton's four villages, sitting astride the Otter River, with Templeton Center and its common on the high ground, East Templeton over toward Gardner, and Otter River village in the northeast corner. Chair making built Baldwinville: the settlement grew out of a 1763 saw and grist mill into the economic center of the town once the railroads arrived in 1847 and 1872, and while the mill buildings are gone the tight street pattern they created is not. The Otter River runs north to join the Millers in Winchendon, and Otter River State Forest wraps around Beamon Pond along that line. Route 2 clips the town on its way from Athol to Gardner and Route 68 carries traffic through Baldwinville, but past those two the roads narrow quickly into pine woods, old farm lots and long private drives.
