Milford grew up around two rivers — the Charles running north to south through the middle of town and the Mill River tracing the western line — and the mill seats on both of them built the boot and shoe trade that took the population from roughly 1,300 to nearly 10,000 in forty years. After 1870 the pink granite quarries in the rocky northeast took over, sending Milford stone to the original Pennsylvania Station and the Boston Public Library and drawing the Irish and Italian families whose neighborhoods still shape the older streets. Those streets are narrow and tightly built with little driveway room, while the subdivisions that filled in after Interstate 495 opened in 1969 are the opposite.
