Essex County runs from the Saugus River up to the New Hampshire line, and the ground under it changes every few miles. Lynn, Salem and Beverly sit on the tight coastal grid just north of Boston; Cape Ann is granite and ledge from Magnolia around through Gloucester to Rockport; the Merrimack Valley cities of Lawrence, Methuen and Haverhill carry the old mill blocks and the hillside neighborhoods above them; and the interior towns of Boxford, Topsfield, Hamilton and Georgetown run to wooded acreage with driveways measured in hundreds of feet. Salt marsh wraps Ipswich, Rowley and Newbury, and the barrier sand of Plum Island and Salisbury Beach finishes the northern coast.
That mix decides what goes on the truck. ¾" crushed stone re-bases driveways on Cape Ann ledge and holds up under the long farm drives in Boxford and West Newbury; dense pack compacts patio, walkway and shed-pad bases; ¾" pea stone works as decorative ground cover and as drainage fill in French drains and trench work; and decorative stone finishes borders, dry riverbeds and the coastal beds where salt exposure rules out much else. Sandy ground north of Ipswich needs stone for stability, while the heavier interior soils need it for drainage. Everything is sold by the cubic yard and delivered by dump truck with no minimum order, and a typical driveway or drainage load runs 5 to 6 yards.
Essex County straddles our 30-mile line, so delivery pricing splits in two. Road distance from our Dorchester yard is about 13 miles at the Lynn and Saugus end and close to 45 miles out at Merrimac, Salisbury and the tip of Cape Ann, which puts gravel delivery anywhere between the $100 flat rate and roughly $160. Lynn, Saugus, Swampscott, Nahant, Marblehead, Salem, Peabody, Beverly, Danvers, Lynnfield, Middleton, Andover and Topsfield all sit inside the flat zone at $100; Wenham, Hamilton, North Andover and Lawrence sit right on the line; and past that, $100 covers the first 30 miles and it is $4 per mile beyond.
