A compacted stone dust base topped with 2–3 inches of coarse sand is the classic paddock build — firm below, forgiving underfoot, and quick to drain. Stone dust packs into a hard, water-shedding platform that keeps hooves out of the mud; coarse sand above it stays loose without holding water. Pitch the whole pad an inch or two so storm water runs off the low side instead of ponding mid-paddock.
Typical paddock layers
- Base: 3–4" of #10 stone dust, compacted and pitched to drain
- Top: 2–3" of coarse sand
- Quantities: a 20×40 ft paddock runs about 8–10 yards of dust and 5–7 of sand
