The lasting fix for a muddy driveway is a dense-graded base compacted over the soft spots, topped with ¾" crushed stone. Dense Pack blends stone with fines, so it locks into a hard crust instead of disappearing into the mud one stone at a time.
Two ways to attack the mud
- Quick fix: 2–3" of ¾" crushed granite spread straight over the worst ruts
- Proper rebuild: 4–6" of compacted Dense Pack base under a 2–4" stone top coat
- Winter bonus: stone spreads fine on frozen ground — no need to wait for spring
Either way, crown the surface slightly so meltwater sheds to the sides instead of pooling mid-lane. Order Dense Pack ¾" to minus or ¾" gray granite by the cubic yard — up to 6 yards per truckload.
