Common borrow is bank-run structural fill — the material for raising grades, filling deep holes, and building up a site before anything finished goes on top. It is unscreened, so expect a natural mix of soil, sand, and stone that compacts well in lifts.
Because it is not a growing medium, cap it: 4–6 inches of loam over compacted borrow is the standard finish wherever lawn is going. Contractors use borrow for the economical bulk of a fill job and save screened products for the top layer.
