Screening removes rocks, roots, sticks, and clay clumps by passing the soil through a mesh — what is left is even-textured loam that rakes smooth and seeds clean. Unscreened loam straight from a stockpile can hide fist-size stones and root wads that keep surfacing every time you grade, which turns a weekend seeding job into a week of picking rock.
Ottr's loam is sold screened, so it is ready for seeding, sod prep, topdressing, and finish grading right off the truck — no sifting on your end, and no surprise rock pile at the bottom of the load. Like any natural soil, color and texture vary a bit from load to load, which is normal.
