Either works as a ¼–½ inch topdressing before overseeding — compost feeds the soil, loam levels the surface, and a blend of the two does both. Spread it thin enough that existing grass tips still poke through, rake it in, then seed. Late August through September is the prime overseeding window in Massachusetts, so August delivery timing is ideal.
Which to choose
| Your lawn | Better pick |
|---|---|
| Thin and tired, needs feeding | Compost topdress |
| Bumpy or uneven surface | Super Loam to level as you seed |
| Both problems at once | Blend loam and compost |
One cubic yard covers about 650 sq ft at a half inch — roughly 1,300 sq ft at a quarter inch. Order Super Loam or compost by the yard, and size the job with the material calculator.
