Pea stone makes an excellent walkway — soft underfoot, quick-draining, classic New England look — as long as you edge it. The stones are rounded, which is exactly why they feel good to walk on and exactly why they wander without a border.
Lay 2–3 inches over a compacted base and hold the edges with steel, aluminum, or stone. Expect to rake occasionally and top up every few seasons. If wandering stones would drive you crazy, an angular ⅜-inch crushed gravel locks in place instead — the trade-off is a firmer, less beachy feel. Coverage-wise, one yard handles about 100–160 sq ft depending on depth.
