FAQ

Is black mulch safe for plants?

Yes — black mulch is safe for plants, people, and pets. Its color comes from iron oxide and carbon black colorants applied to the wood, and the bold black look holds for 6–9 months before mellowing. The deep color makes spring greens and new plantings pop, which is why black leads so many April refreshes.

Where to use it

  • Great: foundation beds, trees, shrubs, perennial borders
  • Fine: pathways and open beds — expect strong color through the season
  • Skip: direct contact with food crops — keep it outside vegetable beds and use a natural, undyed mulch inside them

Spread it 2 inches deep on existing beds or 3 inches on new ones. Order Black Mulch by the yard — up to 10 cubic yards per delivery.
