Plan on 1 to 1.5 cubic yards of loam per 1,000 sq ft for a fall overseeding topdress. That puts down a 1/4- to 1/2-inch layer — thick enough to level dips and bed the seed, thin enough that existing grass grows through. The math: sq ft x depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards.
