Plan 4–6 inches of compacted dense-graded base plus 2–4 inches of ¾" top stone — for a 1,000 sq ft driveway, that's roughly 12–18 cubic yards of base and 6–12 yards of top. The base layer does the structural work; the top layer is just the wearing surface you see and drive on. Skipping base and piling top stone deeper never works — it stays loose and ruts.
