FAQ

How many yards to build up a low backyard?

Multiply the area by the average depth you need to raise it, then divide by 324 — a 500 sq ft low spot lifted an average of 4 inches works out to about 6.2, so order 7 cubic yards. Low areas are rarely uniform, so measure the deepest point and the shallowest edge and use the average as your depth.

How to figure it

  • Measure: length × width of the low area, in feet
  • Average the lift: (deepest spot + shallowest edge) ÷ 2, in inches
  • Calculate: (sq ft × inches) ÷ 324 = cubic yards, rounded up

Build the base with fill dirt, then cap the top 4–6 inches with screened loam wherever grass will grow. Check your numbers with the material calculator or call or text (617) 645-0987.
