Measure along the slope's surface — not the flat distance on a map — then add about 10 percent, because slopes always eat more material than the math suggests. Run a tape from the top of the grade to the bottom following the ground, multiply by the width, and use that surface area in the standard formula: (sq ft × depth in inches) ÷ 324 = cubic yards.
Example: a 40-ft-wide slope
- Surface run measures 22 ft (vs 20 ft on the flat) × 40 ft wide = 880 sq ft
- 880 × 3" ÷ 324 = 8.1 cubic yards
- Add ~10% for settling and slippage → order 9 yards
