FAQ

How do I convert cubic yards to tons?

Multiply cubic yards by the material's weight: crushed stone runs about 1.4 tons per yard, sand 1.35, loam 1.05, and mulch just 0.45. Working backward, one ton of stone is roughly 0.7 cubic yards. Contractors bidding from engineered plans hit this constantly — plans speak in tons, trucks deliver in yards.

Tons per cubic yard

Crushed stone / gravel ~1.4 tons
Sand ~1.35 tons
Loam / topsoil ~1.05 tons
Mulch ~0.45 tons

For reference, a full 6-yard stone load is about 8.4 tons. Ottr sells by the cubic yard, so when a plan lists tons, convert first and round up — moisture swings weight, and winter-wet material runs heavier, but volume is what you're buying. The material calculator handles yardage; call or text (617) 645-0987 for tonnage edge cases.
