Keeping a Dennis Raised Bed Watered Through a Cape Summer

A Dennis raised bed dries out fast because it sits on glacial outwash sand with nothing underneath to hold moisture. Fix it with a soil mix carrying real organic matter, two inches of undyed mulch on the surface, and deep infrequent watering. Delivery to Dennis is $275–$290 per load.

Dennis runs from Cape Cod Bay on the 6A side down to Nantucket Sound on the 28 side, with the Bass River on its western edge, and almost all of it is sand. Fine for a driveway, hard on a tomato.

Why does a Dennis raised bed dry out so much faster?

Two things stack up. Most beds are open-bottomed, so water past the root zone drains into the outwash sand and never comes back. And a raised bed has exposed sidewalls in full sun and salt wind, drying from three directions instead of one. A bed that holds four days of moisture in Newton holds two here. The answer is a mix that holds what you give it.

What soil mix actually holds water in sandy conditions?

Organic matter is the water-holding ingredient, and sand has none. You want a blend that already carries compost:

Material Price per yard Best use in a Dennis bed
Garden Soil $70 Ready to plant. The straightforward fill for a new vegetable bed.
Horticultural Soil $65 Nursery-grade blend, good for mixed ornamental and edible beds.
Compost $50 Top-dressing an existing bed, or raising the organic fraction of a refill.

For volume: cubic yards = (square feet × depth in inches) ÷ 324. A 4-by-8 bed filled 12 inches deep is 1.2 yards. Three beds is 3.6. Five beds is six yards — exactly one load.

Why should I order one material instead of two?

Because delivery is charged per load, soil caps at six yards per trip, and loads are counted per line item. That combination is the biggest cost lever on any Cape order.

Say you want three yards of garden soil and one of compost for three beds in West Dennis. Four yards of material — about $260 worth — on two trucks at $275 each. $550 of freight for $260 of dirt. Order six yards of one blended product and it is one trip at $275, filling five beds instead of three.

Does mulch help, and is it worth a second load?

Mulch helps a lot. Two inches on the surface cuts evaporation and stops the crust that makes water run off instead of soaking in. Use undyed mulch around food crops — pine bark at $55 a yard or hemlock at $63 — and keep dyed black mulch out of vegetable beds.

Whether it earns its own delivery is usually no. One yard covers about 100 square feet at three inches — three 4-by-8 beds — but as its own line item that is a second truck: $55 of mulch behind $275 of freight. Either fold it into a real mulch order for the whole property (mulch caps at ten yards) or top-dress with compost off the load you are already taking.

How should I water a raised bed on Cape sand?

  • Deep, not often. A slow soak twice a week beats a daily splash, which evaporates before it reaches the roots.
  • Early morning. Less evaporation, and foliage dries before evening.
  • Check with a finger. Push down three inches; if it is damp, skip the day.
  • Keep mulch an inch back from crowns and stems.

Frequently asked questions

How many yards fill a 4-by-8 raised bed?

1.2 yards at 12 inches deep, 0.8 at 8 inches. Five beds at 12 inches is six yards — one full load.

What does delivery to Dennis cost?

$275 in West Dennis rising to $290 in East Dennis, per load. Dennis is about 74 driving miles from our Dispatch Office in Dorchester, so the flat 30-mile rate does not apply.

Is there a minimum order?

No — one yard is a valid order. Given the per-load fee, most Dennis orders land at or near the six-yard soil cap.
