How Much Does Topsoil Weigh?

If you're planning a lawn install, garden bed buildout, or yard regrade, knowing what a cubic yard of topsoil actually weighs helps you avoid surprises — from delivery truck capacity to driveway load limits to wheelbarrow trips. This guide breaks down topsoil weight and how to calculate the load for your project.

What Is Topsoil?

Topsoil is the upper 6-12 inches of soil — the dark, organic-rich layer where plants actually grow. Quality topsoil has a balanced mix of sand, silt, clay, and organic matter (compost, decomposed leaves, root material), giving it the texture and nutrient profile that supports lawns, garden beds, and trees.

Most bulk topsoil sold for landscape use is screened — passed through a mesh to remove rocks, debris, and clumps — leaving a uniform, easy-to-spread material.

What Affects the Weight of Topsoil?

1. Moisture Content

Saturated topsoil can weigh 30-40% more than dry topsoil. After heavy rain or irrigation, the same cubic yard that weighs 1,800 lbs dry can hit 2,400 lbs wet.

2. Organic Content & Composition

Topsoil with higher organic content (compost, leaf mold) weighs less than mineral-heavy topsoil. Sandy topsoil weighs slightly less than clay-rich topsoil; both weigh less than soils dense with rock or stone fragments.

3. Screening & Aeration

Freshly screened topsoil is aerated and full of air pockets — lighter than the same volume of un-screened or settled soil. After a few days in the pile or worked into beds, it compacts and effectively weighs more per square foot.

Average Topsoil Weight Per Cubic Yard

On average, screened topsoil weighs about 2,000 to 2,200 pounds per cubic yard. The full range runs from 1,800 lbs (dry, sandy, organic-rich) to 2,400 lbs (wet, clay-rich, mineral-dense).

For reference, a full Ottr dump truck load (6 cubic yards) of average topsoil weighs about 12,000-13,200 lbs (6-6.6 tons).

How to Calculate Topsoil Weight

To estimate the total weight of topsoil for your project, use:

  • Volume needed (in cubic yards)
  • Estimated weight per yard (~2,100 lbs as a working average)

Then multiply:
Cubic Yards x Weight per Cubic Yard = Total Weight (lbs)

Example:
For a new 1,000 sq ft lawn at 4" of topsoil depth, you need about 12 cubic yards. At ~2,100 lbs/yard:
12 x 2,100 = 25,200 lbs (about 12.6 tons)

For coverage planning: 1 cubic yard of topsoil covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches depth, or 80 square feet at 4 inches.

💡 Tip: Use the calculator on the Topsoil ½" Screened product page to estimate exactly how many cubic yards your project needs.
