How Much Does Compost Weigh?

If you're amending soil, topdressing a lawn, or filling raised beds, knowing what a cubic yard of compost actually weighs determines your delivery truck capacity, driveway load limit, and how many wheelbarrow trips you're in for. This guide breaks down compost weight and how to calculate it for any garden project.

What Is Compost?

Compost is decomposed organic matter — leaves, grass, food scraps, manure, wood chips — broken down by microorganisms into a dark, crumbly, nutrient-rich soil amendment. Quality landscape compost is screened, fully cured, and free of weed seeds.

What Affects the Weight of Compost?

1. Moisture Content

This is the biggest variable for compost. Dry compost can weigh 800 lbs per cubic yard; the same compost saturated after a rain can hit 1,400 lbs. Compost is highly absorbent and the water weight adds up fast.

2. Maturity & Decomposition Stage

Fully cured compost is denser than partially decomposed material. Younger compost (still has visible particles) weighs less per cubic yard than fully aged, fine-screened compost.

3. Source Material

Manure-based compost is heavier than leaf-mold compost. Mushroom compost falls in the middle. Yard-waste compost is lightest because it has more cellulose air pockets.

Average Compost Weight Per Cubic Yard

On average, compost weighs about 1,000 to 1,200 pounds per cubic yard. The full range runs from 800 lbs (dry, young, leaf-based) to 1,400 lbs (wet, mature, manure-based).

For reference, a full Ottr dump truck load (6 cubic yards) of average compost weighs about 6,600 lbs (3.3 tons) — lighter than topsoil or sand, easier on the driveway.

How to Calculate Compost Weight

To estimate the total weight for your project:

  • Volume needed (in cubic yards)
  • Estimated weight per yard (~1,100 lbs as a working average)

Then multiply:
Cubic Yards x Weight per Cubic Yard = Total Weight (lbs)

Example:
For a 4' x 8' raised bed with 12" of compost-topsoil blend, you need about 1.2 cubic yards. At ~1,100 lbs/yard:
1.2 x 1,100 = 1,320 lbs (about 0.66 tons)

For coverage planning: 1 cubic yard of compost covers about 100 square feet at 3" depth, or 324 square feet at the 1" lawn topdressing depth.

💡 Tip: Use the calculator on the Compost product page to estimate your delivery.
