What it's good for
- Driveway accents and wide decorative borders — substantial enough to hold its ground
- Dry creek beds and dry riverbed features — bright white contrast at scale
- Drainage — French drains, downspout splash zones, and low spots where larger voids move water
- Broad decorative beds where ½" and ¾" read too fine
- Erosion control on gentle slopes and along foundation lines
- Bold, high-contrast modern designs against dark mulch, granite, or stone
How much white marble do I need?
For a 40' × 6' driveway border at 3" depth, plan on about 2.2 cubic yards. For a 20' × 3' dry creek bed feature at 4" depth, you'll need roughly 0.75 cubic yards. For a French drain trench 60' × 12" × 6" deep, roughly 1.1 cubic yards.
Rule of thumb: 1 cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3" depth. With 1½" stone, plan for at least 3–4" of depth so the larger chunks seat properly — and order 10% extra for settling.
How White Marble 1½" compares
vs. White Marble ¾" — Same material, larger size. 1½" reads bolder and drains better, making it the stronger choice for driveways, dry creek beds, and drainage. ¾" is the more versatile middle size for general decorative beds.
vs. White Marble ½" — Same bright white stone at a much smaller size. ½" is refined and foot-friendly for paths and top-dressing; 1½" is the large-scale, high-impact option that isn't meant for walking on.
vs. Blue-Gray Granite 1½" — Same gradation, different look. Granite is angular gray; marble is bright white. Pick by color preference.
vs. Mixed-Color Granite ¾" — Mixed granite is multi-tone (pink, gray, white, black). White marble is pure white. Marble wins on brightness; granite wins on visual depth.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between White Marble 1½" and ¾"?
Same physical material — bright white crushed marble. The 1½" is larger, reads bolder, and moves water better, making it ideal for driveways, dry creek beds, and drainage. The ¾" is smaller and more versatile for everyday decorative beds and borders.
Will white marble stay white?
Mostly yes. Light gray dust may accumulate over time but a quick rinse with a garden hose restores the brilliant white. Avoid placing directly under deciduous trees — leaves can stain.
Is it safe to walk on barefoot?
Not really — at 1½" the chunks are large and uneven underfoot. For walkways and paths where comfort matters, choose White Marble ½" or ¾" instead.
Can I use white marble in a sandbox?
No — these chunks are far too large for play. For sandboxes use Mason Sand instead.
Is 1½" good for drainage?
Yes — the larger stone size creates bigger voids that move water well, which is why it's a solid pick for French drains, downspout splash areas, and low, wet spots.
How much does a cubic yard weigh?
About 2,700 lbs (~1.35 tons).
