Collection: Snow & Ice Management
The South Shore winter doesn't care whether the lot is residential or commercial — black ice forms at 28°F and the call comes in at 4 a.m. Ottr stocks bulk salt, treated salt, and salt-sand blends so plow contractors and homeowners can pre-treat, post-storm scatter, and stretch supply through a hard February.
The four de-icing products on the yard:
- Rock Salt (Untreated) — standard sodium chloride. Effective down to ~15°F. The workhorse for driveways and walks under typical New England conditions. Lowest cost per cubic yard.
- Rock Salt (Treated) — brine-coated salt that stays effective into single digits and pre-wets so it sticks to surfaces instead of bouncing off. Use when temps are dropping below 15°F or for pre-storm application.
- Salt & Sand 50/50 — half rock salt, half mason sand. Use when temps drop below salt's effective range — the sand provides traction even if the salt isn't melting.
- Salt & Sand 20/80 — traction-first blend (20% salt, 80% sand). The right choice for parking lots and steep drives where you need grit more than melt. Stretches your salt supply through a long stretch of cold.
- Mason Sand — pure sand for traction-only application on private roads, sidewalks, and surfaces where chloride damage is a concern.
Coverage rule of thumb: 1 cubic yard of rock salt covers ~10,000 sq ft at typical residential application rates (½ lb per sq ft). A 14-yard load handles a small commercial parking-lot route for a single major storm.
Order ahead. Bulk salt sells out fast once a storm front lands on the forecast. Same-day or next-day dump-truck delivery across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Pickup welcome at our Brockton yard for contractors with their own loaders.
