Collection: Driveway Construction & Repair
A driveway built on the right base in eastern Massachusetts will outlast two roof replacements. Skip the base, and the surface stone migrates into the soil within two seasons. The standard Ottr build for a residential gravel drive in Brockton, Plymouth, or anywhere on the South Shore is 4–6" of compacted dense-pack base, then a 2–3" top course of ¾" crushed stone or river gravel for color.
Base layer (compacted, 4–6" deep):
- Dense Pack ¾" to minus — the workhorse base. Sharp ¾" stone with crushed fines that locks tight under a plate compactor.
- Crushed Concrete 1" to minus — recycled base material; same compaction behavior as dense pack at a friendlier price for larger drives.
- Gray Crushed Rock 1.5" — use under dense pack on soft sub-grades (heavy clay, organic soils) for extra structure.
Surface course (2–3" deep):
- Gray Crushed Rock ¾" — the classic New England driveway look. Locks well, sheds water.
- Mixed-Color Granite Rock ¾" — warmer beige/pink tones; reads better against brick or fieldstone homes.
- Blue Stone Rock ¾" and ½" — angular crushed bluestone; premium look, holds shape under tire load.
- Brown Stone Rock ¾" and Riverbed Rock ¾" — rounded river-style top course for a softer aesthetic. Use over a well-compacted base; rounded stone shifts more than crushed.
Edge & detail stone: Brown Stone Rock ⅜" and Gray Crushed Rock ⅜" work as a finer top dressing or decorative edge band against asphalt seams.
Sizing rule of thumb: A 12'×40' single-car drive at 6" total depth = ~9 cubic yards (5 yards base + 4 yards surface). A 20'×50' double-car drive at 6" = ~19 yards.
Same-day or next-day dump-truck delivery across MA and RI for orders over 3 yards. We can split-load base and surface stone on one truck.
