FAQ

Is your rock washed or screened?

Decorative gravel and driveway stone from Ottr are screened and washed. Aggregate base materials (Dense Pack ¾" to minus, Crushed Concrete) intentionally include fines because the fines are what lets the material lock together under compaction.

What's screened/washed and what isn't (by intent)

Material Screened? Washed? Why
Decorative river rock (Riverbed ¼", ⅜", ¾", 1.5") Yes Yes Visible landscape use — needs to look clean
Crushed driveway stone (Gray Crushed ⅜", ¾", 1.5"; Blue Stone ⅜", ½", ¾") Yes Yes Top-coat use; minimal dust at delivery
Decorative specialty (White Marble, Mexican Beach Pebble, Granite, Creek Rock) Yes Yes Premium decorative — high quality standard
Dense Pack ¾" to minus Yes NO (intentional) Base material — the fines are required for compaction
Crushed Concrete 1" to minus Yes NO (intentional) Base material — fines bind the recycled aggregate
Mason Sand, Paver Sand, Concrete Sand, Septic Sand Yes Yes Construction-grade sand — washed for spec compliance

What 'fines' means in delivered material

Even washed and screened materials can have a thin layer of dust at delivery from transit handling. This usually washes away with the first rain. For decorative installs where appearance matters immediately, a quick rinse with a hose after spreading clears it.
