Best Stone for a Driveway: What to Use for Long-Lasting, Durable Results
Compartir
If you're building or refreshing a driveway in the Greater Boston area, selecting the right stone is one of the most important decisions you'll make. A durable driveway requires materials that compact well, offer solid drainage, and can handle heavy use over time. At Ottr Landscape Supply, we deliver the stone blends that do just that—right to your jobsite.
The Ideal Base Layer: Dense Pack (½" to Minus)
Start with a solid foundation. Dense Pack, also known as ½" to Minus, is a crushed gravel mix that contains stone and fines. It compacts tightly to form a hard, stable base that won’t shift or wash out easily. For areas like Massachusetts that deal with freezing temperatures and heavy precipitation, a base layer like Dense Pack is essential for long-term driveway performance.
Best Top Layer Choices: Crushed Stone or Crushed Concrete
Once your base is in place, it’s time to choose your top layer. We typically recommend:
-
¾" Crushed Stone – This angular gravel locks together while still offering great drainage. It has a classic look and performs well under vehicle traffic.
-
Crushed Concrete – A sustainable and cost-effective alternative, recycled crushed concrete delivers the same compaction benefits at a lower price point.
For a more decorative finish, Riverbed Rock or Pea Gravel can be used as top layers. However, they’re best paired with a retaining edge or border to keep everything in place.
